The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years after its discovery. In Madeira, vines are grown in small earth plots called “poios,” supported by earth walls on the slopes of the mountains, often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, as well as its production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unparalleled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
