The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports, 25 years after its discovery. In Madeira, vines are grown in small plots of earth called “poios,” supported by earth walls on the mountain slopes that are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, as well as the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to the unrivaled distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are highlighted for producing this fortified wine, the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
