Description

The Manz family moved to the quiet village of Cheleiros in western Portugal in 2004 and quickly fell in love with the people and the place. The region’s winemaking heritage, with its pastoral landscape and forgotten customs, immediately captured André Manz, who, with local help and advice, decided to experiment with producing wine for personal consumption. After identifying the grape varieties that would be planted in a forgotten vineyard tucked within an orchard, he discovered that one of the varieties was a grape virtually extinct in Portugal, the Jampal. Very few producers today take a chance on this variety, given its low profitability, but André Manz chose not to follow anyone else’s footsteps, only his own. Today, his business expansion already spans three winemaking regions—Douro, Lisbon, and the Setúbal Peninsula—and 25 countries. (Illustrative image only)
