José Maria da Fonseca is closely linked to Moscatel de Setúbal, to the point of almost becoming a synonym for this great wine born in the Setúbal region. In truth, some of the world’s finest muscatels are produced within the heritage of this ancient family business. Founded in 1834 by José Maria da Fonseca, who had just finished his studies at the University of Coimbra as a mathematician, the company created the Moscatel de Setúbal brand in 1849. Though JMF is best known for its exceptional muscatels, it also launched timeless table wine labels such as Periquita (1850) and Lancers (1944). JMF’s muscatels are rare relics released in limited quantities and are a must‑visit. The oldest muscatels in the region belong exclusively to this company, are absolutely unforgettable, and stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the world’s best fortified wines such as Port and Madeira.
