The name José Maria da Fonseca is closely tied to Moscatel de Setúbal, to the point that it has become almost synonymous with this great wine from the Setúbal region. The truth is that some of the finest Moscatéis in the world come from the heart of this historic family-owned company. José Maria da Fonseca was founded in 1834 by José Maria da Fonseca himself, who had just finished his studies in mathematics at the University of Coimbra. Fifteen years later, in 1849, the Moscatel de Setúbal brand was born. Although JMF is best known for its great Moscatéis, it has also created timeless table wine brands, such as Periquita, launched in 1850, and Lancers, launched in 1944. JMF's Moscatéis are rare treasures, released in small quantities, and are a must-stop for any wine lover. The region's oldest Moscatéis belong exclusively to this company, and they are absolutely unforgettable, rivaling the finest fortified wines in the world, such as Port and Madeira.
