This is a Muscat rich in honeyed notes, dried fruit, with subtle hints of resin. On the palate it is immediately enveloping and silky, giving a long, persistent finish. The name José Maria da Fonseca is closely linked to Moscatel de Setúbal, to the point of becoming almost a synonym for this great wine born in the Setúbal region. In fact, some of the best muscatels in the world are produced here by this old family enterprise. José Maria da Fonseca was founded in 1834 by its eponymous founder, a recent mathematics graduate from the University of Coimbra. He established the company, and 15 years later, in 1849, the Moscatel de Setúbal brand was born. While JMF is mainly known for its premium Muscatels, it also created timeless table‑wine labels such as Periquita (1850) and Lancers (1944). JMF’s muscatels are rare relics released in a drip‑by‑drip fashion and are a must‑stop. The region’s oldest muscatels belong solely to this company and are absolutely unforgettable, standing shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the world’s best fortified wines such as Port and Madeira.
