The name José Maria da Fonseca is closely associated with Moscatel de Setúbal, to the point that it has become almost a synonym for this celebrated wine from the Setúbal region. In fact, some of the world’s finest muscatels are produced in the cellar of this ancient family business. José Maria da Fonseca was founded in 1834 by its namesake, a mathematician who had just finished his studies at the University of Coimbra. Fifteen years later, in 1849, the Moscatel de Setúbal brand was born. While JMF is best known for its great muscatels, it has also created timeless table‑wine labels such as Periquita (1850) and Lancers (1944). JMF’s muscatels are rare relics released in limited quantities and are a must‑try stop. The oldest muscatels from the region belong exclusively to this company and are unforgettable, rivaling the world’s best fortified wines such as Port and Madeira.
