“Proibido” – a name hinting at something extraordinary, and it certainly lives up to the promise. Born from a vineyard planted in 1957 near Foz Côa in the Douro Superior, this wine demands a little forethought. Produced in a limited run of just 868 bottles, and only in exceptional vintages, “Proibido” is a wine with the potential to age gracefully for 25 to 30 years. The meticulous, hand-picked harvest concentrates the power of the indigenous grapes – Sousão, Vinhas Velhas, Tinta Francisca, Bastardo and Mourisco – in a remarkably fresh terroir. The high vine density of around 8,000 per hectare, coupled with the xisto-quartz soil famed for its minerality, is a key factor. Having achieved a remarkable 94/100 from Wine Advocate and winning the “Best of Portugal 2022” award, “Proibido” is a testament to dedication and tradition. It pairs beautifully with grilled beef or earthy mushroom dishes – a wine that truly invites contemplation of the passage of time.
