This Alicante Bouschet from Quinta da Fonte Souto is clearly a wine that’s spent some time listening to the forest. Those earthy, brambly notes of woodland floor and blackcurrant are a direct reflection of its roots, but the 14 months in French oak have added a welcome layer of finesse, elevating it beyond a simple rustic character. Expect ripe black fruit – blackberry, blueberry, and dark plum – alongside a subtle hint of liquorice. On the palate, it’s impressively structured, boasting refined tannins and a restrained acidity. It’s a wine with serious presence, perfectly suited to accompany earthy dishes like wild mushrooms or truffles, or perhaps a particularly robust smoked ham – a truly contemplative experience.
