The Quinta da Lagoalva de Cima stretches along the south bank of the Tagus, roughly 2 km from the town of Alpiarça and 11 km from Santarém. In 1834 the estate was bought by Henrique Teixeira de Sampayo, 1st Count of Póvoa. A few years later, the marriage of D. Maria Luísa Noronha de Sampaio to D. Domingos António Maria Pedro de Souza e Holstein, 2nd Duke of Palmela, transferred the property to the Casa Palmela from that point on. Today the estate is still run by its descendants, covering 45 hectares of vineyards planted with both national and international varieties. (illustrative image)
