After dedicating about 50 years of his life to Duriense viticulture, José António Castro Ramos Pinto Rosas set out to make his dream of creating the “perfect estate” for the production of Port and Douro wines a reality. Following an extensive and detailed study of the Demarcated Region of the Douro, and with the help of topographic maps, José Rosas discovered a property of roughly 20 hectares in the Upper Douro near Vila Nova de Foz Côa. By its characteristics, he judged it to have the ideal conditions for producing wines of superior quality. Today, Jorge Rosas—son of José Rosas and great‑grandson of Adriano Ramos Pinto, founder of the eponymous house—continues this legacy. (illustrative image)
