The earliest known historical references to Quinta da Pellada date back to around 1570. The Demarcated Region of Dão was established in 1908, bounded by three mountain masses – Buçaco, Caramulo, and Serra da Estrela – which shield it from Atlantic winds and provide exceptionally favorable climatic conditions, and Álvaro Castro is one of Portugal's best producers and an undisputed leader in the Dão region.
