This Sousão da Quinta de S. José is a wine that clearly enjoyed a rather dramatic youth. The producers have expertly coaxed every drop of aromatic and polyphenolic intensity from these “pujante” grapes. The result is a wine boasting a stunning deep purple hue and a nose filled with the characteristic fruity notes of the Touriga Nacional, beautifully intertwined with spicy nuances – thanks to ageing in 400-litre French oak barrels. On the palate, it’s a remarkably complex and balanced wine, supported by incredibly fine tannins that deliver a long, lingering finish. Seriously, it deserves a substantial meal – particularly well with a hearty red meat dish.
