Let’s be honest, this Quinta de Valbom wine isn’t going to shout at you – it demands a little patience. Initially, the deep ruby colour hints at considerable intensity, though it’s understandably a touch reticent. On the nose, you’ll detect ripe black and red fruits, with a subtle smoked note that rewards a longer contemplation. The palate reveals a substantial structure, punctuated by cassis and fresh spices, though some find the finish a little lacking – Robert Parker awarded it 91 points, suggesting a more spectacular conclusion. A hearty rabbit stew would undoubtedly unlock its full potential.
