This Quinta do Crasto Touriga Franca is a remarkably precise wine – a clear statement of intent. Crafted exclusively from Touriga Franca grapes harvested only in ‘high quality’ years, it feels almost as though the vines themselves are overseeing the selection process. The grapes, meticulously sorted in 22kg crates and inspected on a table, are then gently crushed before undergoing maceration in a traditional stone lagar – presumably adding a touch of ‘je ne sais quoi’. Fermentation, meticulously controlled in stainless steel tanks, is followed by 18 months of aging in French oak barrels, resulting in a wine with remarkably smooth tannins and a luxurious texture. The wine’s anticipated 94 points from Wine Enthusiast – due to its deep violet hue and vibrant aromas – seems entirely credible. It’s a wine of impressive intensity that retains a truly remarkable balance, finishing long and persistent, encouraging a second glass. A wine, undoubtedly, for those who appreciate quality and a respect for tradition.
