Quinta do Francês is a family estate with 8 hectares of vineyard, located in the valleys of Silves on the way to the Serra de Monchique, in the Odelouca stream, in the southernmost part of Portugal, the Algarve. With its exceptional climate, the Algarve attracts tourists looking for sun and also offers an excellent terroir for vineyards. The vines grow on a variety of soils such as clay, limestone, granite, and even some slate areas, producing high‑quality grapes. The Algarve has a rich heritage as a wine‑producing region. For many years, wine trade was very important in the Algarve, but by the mid‑20th century production declined as the benefits of wine could not compete with the profits brought by tourism. However, in the 1980s the Algarve gained demarcated region status for Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, and Tavira. About a decade later, there was a revival of the wine‑making tradition in the Algarve, and new wineries began producing quality wines. (Illustrative image)
