This wine, from Quinta do Gradil, clearly spent a rather dramatic youth maturing in oak. Their ‘spin-barrel’ winemaking technique – a bold experiment, no doubt – has resulted in a wonderfully complex aroma of bergamot and balsamic mint, almost a hint of vanilla from the oak. The tannins are impressively intense, like the gaze of a valiant warrior, yet surprisingly elegant, showcasing a truly fascinating terroir. The finish is, as they say, unforgettable, and would pair beautifully with a good black pork roast.
