Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, it displays an intense ruby colour, a powerful aroma of ripe fruit, and on the palate it is velvety and soft. It offers a great freshness that drives it to a long, seductive finish. Quinta do Noval is distinguished by the beauty of its terraces, its house, storehouse, and traditional vats, all of which remain in use. First referenced in 1715, the estate was purchased in 1894 by António José da Silva, who developed it over the following three decades. Its descendants – most recently the van Zeller family – maintained the property until 1993, when it was acquired by AXA. In 1997, Quinta do Noval pioneered the consolidation of all its activities in the Douro Valley rather than in Vila Nova de Gaia. From its vineyards and vats, the Quinta do Noval Nacional 1963 was produced, chosen as one of the 12 best wines of the 20th century by the American publication *Wine Spectator* (illustrative image only).
