The Poço do Lobo Estate was acquired by Caves São João in 1971 and is a rural property of about 37 hectares, located in the small locality of Pocariça in the municipality of Cantanhede. After the acquisition, the estate underwent restructuring with the planting of new grape varieties in addition to the traditional ones, in order to innovate while never losing its ancestral connections. Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally focused on the distribution of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family‑owned winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, following the prohibition on producing Port wine outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company shifted to selling table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of the most celebrated wine brands in the Bairrada region – “Frei João” – was born, and a little later the brand “Porta dos Cavaleiros” from the demarcated region of Dão emerged.
