Description

The Quinta do Poço do Lobo was acquired by Caves São João in 1971 and is a rural property of about 37 hectares, located in the small locality of Pocariça in the municipality of Cantanhede. After the acquisition, the estate was restructured with the planting of new grape varieties in addition to the traditional ones, aiming to innovate while never losing its connection to its ancestors. Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on the distribution of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it is the oldest still‑operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition of producing Port wine outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company shifted to marketing table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of the most celebrated wine brands in the Bairrada region – “Frei João” – was launched, and a little later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Demarcated Region of the Dão was introduced.
