This “Vale da Maria” from Quinta do Vale is a rather bold venture, aged 75% in new French oak – it certainly demands a little maturing on your part. Initially reserved, the 80+ year-old vines, facing north and east, unveil bright citrus and mineral notes, like a well-kept secret. Don’t mistake this quietude for weakness, however; it blossoms with surprising complexity, a refreshing grip, and a finish long enough to impress even James Suckling, who awarded it 93 points. Perfect with grilled fresh fish, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon, to really bring out its elegance.
