Quinta do Vale Meão Harvest Report The 2019 growing season was marked by a very dry and cold climate. The start of November 2018 brought precipitation levels above average, but these values dropped in the following months, resulting in a dry but also cooler-than‑average winter. Spring began with high temperatures, yet in its final phase they fell considerably, remaining low throughout the summer. This phenomenon created favourable conditions for flowering, providing a quite interesting productive potential. It was also noted that, due to the low temperatures during summer, heat damage to the bunches was practically nonexistent. From a physiological point of view, the mild days and cool nights in August led to slow, balanced ripening, which minimised the usual water stress on the vines. A slower ripening produced a long harvest, with highly selective picking from the different plots and varieties. Picking of red grapes began on 27 August with the always early Tinta Barroca. The last grapes of the estate were harvested on 10 October. Vinification The wine results from a rigorous selection of the best port wines each year and consists of more than ten varieties, with Touriga Franca the dominant one. Classic vinification takes place in tanks, where the grape varieties are blended with 100 % must. After crushing, the must is cooled. At the end of the harvest day, foot‑treading takes place in tanks for four hours. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, then mechanical pressing is carried out regularly until the addition of selected brandy. The wine ages in wooden barrels and is bottled 22 months after the harvest. Allergen information Contains sulfites. SKU: 106840
