This wine from Herdade do Esporão offers a fascinating glimpse back in time – its vineyards clearly have stories to tell, and a distinctly balsamic aroma to prove it. Hand-harvested with careful selection on the vine, only the most perfect bunches make it to the granite lagares, where foot treading contributes to a wonderfully concentrated and elegant structure. Following a 12-month period in used French oak, the result is a remarkably smooth red with tannins so refined you almost feel sorry for its potential, balanced by a vibrant acidity and a lingering finish that suggests it’s got plenty of life left – ideally enjoyed with a robust roast, but one that will continue to surprise long after the plate is cleared.
