The Alvarinho grape has remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally vines were planted along field margins, with cereals occupying the centre of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, baptising it “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit shaped the family’s history, which has since been linked to Alvarinho production in Melgaço.
