The historic wine region of Tokaj‑Hegyalja is located in the northeastern part of Hungary, near the borders of Slovakia and Ukraine. The area covers only 275 square kilometres (55 km long and 30 km wide). Today, the cultivated area is about 6,200 hectares. Four percent of the area lies within Slovak territory. Tokaj‑Hegyalja became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002 and has the oldest vineyard classification in the world. (illustrative image only)
