This Vale de Lobos from José e Violante clearly had a rather passionate chat with a French oak barrel – nine months of ageing, they say, coupled with a notably persistent skin contact maceration. Featuring Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Touriga Nacional, and a healthy malolactic fermentation, this wine promises a welcome layer of complexity. We reckon it would pair beautifully with something a little spicy, perhaps a roasted lamb with peppers.
