The lands that would become Vega Sicilia were contested for years between Peñafiel and the Monastery of Valbuena, and it was in 1477 that the monks and the council reached an agreement. The latter would have jurisdiction over the arable land, while the monks would control the forested areas. However, it was in 1577 that the name Vega de Sicilia first appeared in history, referring to the estate. For centuries the property was exploited and was bought from the Marquis of Valbuena by Toribio Lecanda in 1848, where his son Eloy Lecanda began producing wine professionally in the estate’s cellar. Thus arose the need to build facilities, offices, and ageing warehouses, with the goal of producing wine of a quality comparable to that made in Bordeaux. In 1982 the Álvarez family acquired the property, staying true to the aim that wine is produced only in exceptional harvest years. (illustrative image)
