This Vertente from Niepoort is a wonderfully perplexing wine, hinting at a journey through the Douro’s historic vineyards. The extended harvest, coupled with incredibly discerning selection both in the vines and during the tasting, speaks volumes about their dedication to quality. Vinified in stainless steel with a 22-month ageing in French oak, it delivers a wonderfully smoky and spiced character, alongside a remarkably tense and deep structure. Perfectly balanced acidity and integrated tannins suggest a wine that will age gracefully – particularly lovely with duck or wild mushrooms, I imagine.
