Very few producers—especially in Madeira wine—experience a revolution in their history as profound as Barbeito’s. From being a bulk wine supplier to suddenly becoming a benchmark in the Madeira region is a remarkable achievement, given the strong competition at the time. Everything changed in 1991 when Ricardo Freitas joined the family firm and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita partners, turned Barbeito into one of the region’s leading Madeira wine producers. That same year, another major shift occurred: for the first time, wine production fell under the responsibility of a family member. Two years later, Ricardo carried out his first harvest without external assistance, laying the groundwork for a team united by a single motto: to produce quality wines with a distinctive style.
