The Winegrowing Region was demarcated in 1908, making it the second oldest demarcated region in the country. Situated in a dune area on the coast of the municipality of Sintra, between the Serra and the Atlantic Ocean, stretching from Cabo da Roca to Magoito. The link between Colares and wine is lost in time, but it is known that wine was already being made in this region at the time of the Roman occupation. Later, in 1230, King D. Afonso III granted lands to noblemen on the condition that they cultivate vineyards. The Colares region became famous at the end of the 19th century, more precisely in 1865, when the greatest threat to world viticulture, phylloxera, struck. This tiny insect, originating in the Americas, began to reach Europe alive when the duration of sea voyages was reduced by the introduction of steam engines on ships. Curiously, the vineyards of the Colares region were the only ones to resist phylloxera, due to the depth of their roots, sometimes reaching 8 meters, which prevented the spread of the pest as occurred in other types of soil. Throughout Europe, except in this region, American rootstocks (resistant to the insect) began to be used, grafted with European grape varieties. (image for illustrative purposes only)
