Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, founded in 1922 under the name João Pires & Filhos, has charted a long course, positioning itself as one of the most innovative wine producers in Portugal. The company began by making wines from grapes grown in the Palmela region. In the 1980s, it began expanding, acquiring estates across the country and pioneering new paradigms for quality wine production. Regarded as the finest estate from the first half of the 15th century still standing in Portugal, Quinta da Bacalhôa is a former property of the Portuguese Royal House. Located in Azeitão, the estate and the famous Palácio da Bacalhôa together form a major artistic monument to the nation. Today, Quinta da Bacalhôa belongs to the Fundação Berardo, a family-founded institution headed by Comendador José Berardo, and was declared a National Monument on 23 June 1910. In the surrounding area, visitors find picturesque villages, cellars and one of Portugal’s most beautiful and imposing landscapes – the Arrábida Natural Park.
