Herdade do Esporão With a contemporary style and an elegant, intense profile, these wines reflect the character of carefully selected, well-defined vineyard plots on the Estate. Covering around 700 hectares of vineyards, 40 grape varieties, and 4 olive varieties, orchards and kitchen gardens, Herdade do Esporão is located in the heart of the Alentejo, a region with unique conditions for agriculture: wide diurnal temperature variations, poor and varied soils, and extraordinary biodiversity. Part of the Reguengos de Monsaraz DOC, Herdade do Esporão favors a selection of the finest grapes from its terroir and the creativity of its winemakers to produce wines of personality, structure, and complexity. Produced in small quantities, these are exclusive wines for intense and intimate moments. Its history is long. In the 13th century, D. João de Aboim, a descendant of Egas Moniz, established the Defesa do Esporão, one of the oldest estates in southern Portugal. The Defesas were large, enclosed estates protected from livestock grazing brought in from elsewhere, and they are directly linked to the formation of Portugal during the Christian Reconquest of the south. As examples of agrosilvopastoral systems, the Defesas were characterized by a diversity of uses that promoted biodiversity conservation, a multifunctionality that Esporão continues to uphold today as good practice in protecting our ecosystem. Individual harvesting of each grape variety, destemming, crushing, alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks with controlled temperatures (22 to 25°C), pressing, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tank.
