Wine of an intense, bright red color. It displays aromas of red fruit, with spice notes imparted by the wood. The taste is rich, featuring well‑presented, moderate tannins. Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first recorded in 1616), lies on the banks of the Douro River near the city of Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated wine region—the Douro. At the estate’s quay, Rabelo boats would dock to load tall barrels full of Port wine and carry them to Gaia at the river’s mouth, where they were sold wholesale worldwide. Their identity remained hidden because these wooden barrels bore no producer’s seal. Once at the destination, the wine was bottled and labeled with the mark of the foreign merchants who bought it, some of whom later gained considerable prestige. (Illustrative image only.)
