The Quinta dos Frades Grande Reserva is produced exclusively from grapes harvested from old vineyard plots, each more than 100 years old, drawn from a blend of twenty‑three varieties with a predominance of Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela, Tinta da Barca, Tinta Carvalha, Tinta Francisca, Tinto Cão, Bastardo, Rufete, and Donzelinho. This deep ruby wine spent 12 months aging in new French oak barrels. Its aroma is characterised by a concentration of dark fruits with subtle smoky, toasted and some spicy nuances. On the palate it is full‑bodied, with firm tannins, revealing ripe dark fruit, smoke and spice notes, and a long, persistent finish. Located in Folgosa, Quinta dos Frades is one of the most beautiful and emblematic estates in the Douro wine region. Its records date back to 1256, when it was donated to the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, becoming one of the most important agricultural units owned by the Cistercian order in the area. A fortified, imposing, and majestic house dominates the 200 hectares of the estate. A stunning landscape stretches along the left bank of the Douro for 1,900 metres, dotted with tall cypress, orange, almond, and olive trees. The property covers 100 hectares of vines, almost half of which are over 90 years old. Building on centuries of accumulated winemaking knowledge, the estate launched a portfolio of wines in 2008, among which the Quinta dos Frades DOC Douro red stands out as a prize‑winning wine, recognised as one of the best in the Douro.
