The lands that would become Vega Silicia were contested for years between Peñafiel and the Monastery of Valbuena, and it was in 1477 that the monks and the council reached an agreement. The latter would have jurisdiction and the arable lands, while the monks would hold the forest cover. However, it was in 1577 that the name Vega de Sicilia first appeared in history, referring to the estate. For centuries the property was exploited and bought from the Marquess of Valbuena by Toribio Lecanda in 1848, where his son Eloy Lecanda began to produce wine professionally in the estate's cellar. Thus, the need arose to build facilities, offices, and aging warehouses. The goal was to produce wine of quality comparable to that produced in Bordeaux. In 1982, the Álvarez family bought the property, remaining faithful to the goal, i.e., wine is only produced in exceptional harvest years. (illustrative image)
