Rioja Alavesa

About this region

Rioja Alavesa, in the Basque province of Álava, is the smallest of Rioja's three sub-regions but produces some of the most distinctive wines. The sub-zone sits north of the Ebro on clay-limestone soils with significant calcareous content, and is climatically influenced by the Sierra de Cantabria, which shelters it. Tempranillo here yields wines of fine perfume, freshness and elegance, often lighter-framed than Alta's. Producers such as Remírez de Ganuza, Roda and Artadi have made Alavesa central to Rioja's modern, single-vineyard, terroir-focused movement.
