A teinturier — one of the rare grapes with red flesh as well as red skin — Alicante Bouschet was created in 19th-century France and embraced by the Alentejo, where it has become a defining red. Wines are deeply coloured, full-bodied, robust in tannin and rich in dark fruit. It plays a starring role in many of the Alentejo's most prestigious bottlings — Pera-Manca, Cartuxa, Mouchão — often alongside Aragonez and Trincadeira. In Portugal it has found a second, more illustrious life.
