Encruzado

About this grape variety

The signature white grape of the Dão, Encruzado is among Portugal's most distinctive and ageworthy whites. Wines combine subtle citrus, white pear and stone-fruit aromatics with a textured, almost waxy mid-palate, a flinty mineral edge and balanced natural acidity. Encruzado handles oak well — barrel-fermented bottlings from Quinta dos Roques or Quinta das Maias can age 10–15 years, developing pronounced nutty, honeyed complexity. Almost unique to the Dão and tightly limited in plantings.
