Tempranillo

About this grape variety

Spain's most prestigious red grape, Tempranillo is the dominant variety in Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The early-ripening, thick-skinned grape produces wines of moderate alcohol, balanced acidity, ripe red and dark cherry notes, and a savoury, slightly leathery profile. In Rioja it is traditionally aged in American oak for distinctive vanilla and coconut notes; in Ribera del Duero it produces denser, more powerful wines. Same grape as Portugal's Tinta Roriz and Aragonez.
