Best known under the name Trincadeira in Alentejo (and as Tinta Amarela in Douro), this grape rewards careful viticulture: yields must be controlled and rot pressure managed, but the results are wines of intense colour, ripe black-fruit aromatics and substantial structure. It plays an important supporting role in southern Portuguese blends alongside Aragonez and Alicante Bouschet, and increasingly shows ageing potential as a varietal bottling. Plantings in Douro are smaller but historically valued for Port blends.
