The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports dating back 25 years. On Madeira, vines are grown in small earth plots known as “poios,” supported by earthen walls on the slopes of the mountains, often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, along with its production process and cultivated grape varieties, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unrivalled distinction over time. In addition, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
