Blandy's Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeiran wine for two centuries. Blandy remains the sole family among all the original founders of the Madeiran wine trade still owning and running the company that first produced the wine. The family has played a pivotal role in steering the development of Madeiran wine throughout its history, and its members continue to live on the island, upholding a tradition that dates back to 1811. The Madeira Wine Company began as an association of several Madeiran wine‑producing firms that decided to combine forces to strengthen their purchasing and production capabilities. This association was founded in 1913. During periods of discord, the old family companies Blandy’s and Leacock merged, followed shortly thereafter by the partnership of Miles and Cossart Gordon, creating the largest producer and exporter of Madeiran wine. Regardless of size, preserving the unique characteristics and style of each individual company remained central to the association’s focus. By the late 1970s, the interests in the Madeira Wine Company, as it was then known, had narrowed to only a handful of the original families, with the Blandy family holding the controlling stake. In 1989, the Blandy family, seeking to strengthen the sales and marketing side of the business, invited the Symington family from Porto, Portugal, to join them in partnership. This partnership has continued to the present day, enabling the Madeira Wine Company to play a leading role in the development of the Madeiran wine trade.
