Very few producers, especially in the world of Madeira wine, have experienced a revolution in their history as dramatic as Barbeito’s. To go from a bulk wine supplier to a benchmark of the Madeira region is a remarkable feat, given the strong competitors at the time. Everything unfolded in 1991 when Ricardo Freitas joined the family business and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita partners, turned Barbeito into one of the region’s most prominent Madeira producers. That same year a pivotal change occurred: for the first time, wine production was entrusted to a family member. Two years later, Ricardo completed his first harvest independently, setting the stage for a team united under the motto “produce quality wines with our own style.” The bottling year may not match the accompanying illustration (illustrative image).
