The Alvarinho grape has remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally the vines were planted along the edges of the fields, with cereals occupying the centre of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, christening it “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been linked to Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today, the third generation continues the legacy, extending its vision to organic production. (Illustrative image only)
