The Alvarinho grape remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally the vines were planted along the edges of the fields, with the cereals occupying the center of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous block of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, baptizing it “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, and since then they have been involved in producing Alvarinho in Melgaço. Today, it is the third generation that continues the legacy, extending the vision to organic production. (image purely illustrative)
