This Boina, hailing from the Douro, is delightfully restrained – not because it lacks quality, of course. The fermentation with 20% stems, coupled with a 25% aging in used American oak, has resulted in a remarkably elegant and smooth wine, avoiding excessive extraction. You can truly taste the terroir – old vines (over 60 years) planted on schist/granite at 500m, or in the schistous soils of the Baixo and Cima Corgo – a characteristic that shines through. The blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Souzão delivers a wine with considerable ageing potential, and frankly, it’s a terrific match with roasted lamb. A recent 17/20 score from Grandes Escolhas suggests this restrained wine has a serious future, revealing more complexity with time.
