This Touriga Nacional from Casa Américo clearly benefited from a rigorous education. The hand-selection of grapes – literally, at the feet of the workers – combined with a subsequent destemming using granite mills, suggests a wine of considerable character. Controlled fermentation, employing foot treading and endogenous planks, prevents excessive extraction. Aged for 10 months in new barrels, it’s now awaiting at least 12 months in bottle. Critics at Grandes Escolhas describe it as “intense and muscular,” with a lingering spicy finish – a perfect match for a hearty beef stew, perhaps?
