Description

This house was founded in 1898 by António Bernardino da Silva Chitas in Azenhas do Mar. In its early years, its sales were largely focused on the Lisbon region and large‑scale exports to Brazil. Following him, his son—also named António Bernardino da Silva Chitas Jr.—and today his grandson, António Bernardino Paulo da Silva, have expanded the business so that sales now target not only the domestic market but also a significant portion of exports to various European countries and the United States of America. The company takes pride in the numerous awards it has earned—over 60, including gold and silver medals and honorable mentions—in national and international competitions, recognizing the quality of its wines and its different brands: Colares Chitas, Casa da Azenha, Carunchosa, Ribamar, and Paulo da Silva Garrafeiras. In 1994, the current owner, grandson of the founder, acquired an iconic building in the Colares wine region: the Visconde de Salreu Cellars. This storage facility, built in 1920, originally held its wines in large barrels. In the 1960s its storage capacity was expanded to about one million liters with the construction of large tanks.
