In a natural amphitheater exposed to the south on the slopes of the Douro River, located on the border between the granitic zone of the Região dos Vinhos Verdes and the slate region of the Vinhos do Porto, lies Quinta de Covela, which has been in existence since the 16th Century. With panoramic views of the river, the estate covers 49 hectares, of which 18 are planted with vines, spread across two parishes in the Lower Douro—São Tomé de Covelas and Santa Cruz do Douro—known for their extraordinary natural beauty and rich cultural history. In more recent times, Covela belonged to Manoel de Oliveira, one of the most important European filmmakers of the mid‑20th century to the present day. The director, also a “Man of the Renaissance,” transformed the estate in various ways, building aqueducts, massive walls, stone houses, and granite troughs for drying the corn grown here.
