Herdade do Esporão O Esporão Private Selection White was launched in 2001 under the name “Garrafeira.” The desire to create a distinctive white wine that challenged the classic profile of Alentejo’s great wines led winemaker David Baverstock to bring the Sémillon grape from Australia to our Herdade dos Perdigões. This French‑origin variety is iconic in the Barossa Valley of Australia, where it thrives in a climate similar to that of the Alentejo. The vines, planted on granite‑derived, clay‑rich, deep soils in the Palmeiras vineyard, adapted well to our Alentejo soils and heat. It is from this vineyard that the Private Selection White emerges. Every year we invite an artist to illustrate our labels, blending Portuguese wine culture with art. In 2021 the label was created by Abel Mota. Vinification: The grapes arrive at the cellar in the morning when temperatures are lower and are placed in a pneumatic press. The pressing cycles are long and at low pressure, allowing for gentle and careful extraction. The resulting must is decanted for a shorter period than usual, contributing to the wine’s body and complexity. Fermentation takes place in 500‑litre French oak barrels in a temperature‑controlled cellar at 18 °C. Stage: About six months in French oak barrels, on the lees and accompanied by periodic bâtonnage. This manual process helps stabilize the wine while increasing its creaminess and depth. After bottling, the wine ages for six months in our cellars, promoting the characteristic complexity of this wine. Winemakers: Sandra Alves and João Ramos.
