This impressive Grande Reserva AML 70 from the Alentejo certainly lives up to its claims of charm. Fermented in stainless steel tanks – a reassuringly traditional touch – the grapes, carefully hand-picked, then spent time ageing in both American and French oak, deliver a powerfully structured wine. The tannins need some breathing room, but the acidity provides a welcome counterpoint, as noted by *Revista de Vinhos*, who awarded it 18 points, identifying hints of homemade preserves, vanilla and spice. It’s a fantastic match with a good, grilled beef and a creamy mushroom purée.
